If you're anything like me, you'll be the first person to call yourself stupid for making the smallest mistake , or easily judge yourself or others based off of circumstances, or even drown in a pool of tears listening to sad love songs during a break up. Getting closer to God made me realize just how important the words I say and listen to are. Walking with Jesus is so hard when we drown out His voice with things of this world which is why we're told to set our minds on things of the Spirit and not our flesh. Basically ask yourself, "Would Jesus want me doing this or saying this?" These negative tendencies gotta stop, and we have to rewire our our minds to think positively.
Here's why speaking good things are so important.
It aligns your heart and mind with God's truth. When we speak Gods promises and affirmations, we are reminded of His faithfulness and goodness, which keeps us motivated to stay in His Word, rather than think solely on ourselves and circumstances.
Words have power. "Death and life are in the power of the tongue." Prov. 18:21. We can choose to speak life over ourselves and others, with positivity and encouragement, or death, with destructive and demeaning words. Blessings and curses should not come out of the same mouths (read James 6:9).
It shapes your reality. The more we declare good things, the more we begin to believe and live them out. We all have to pretend to go to sleep before falling asleep. Walking by faith is having hope for things that are not yet seen. The same way we can have confidence knowing that closing our eyes will bring us to a slumber, so can the Word of God. When we speak His Word with confidence, it can manifest. (This is different from law of affirmation and manifestation, a topic for another day)
It strengthens your faith. Reminding ourselves of the promises God has shared will help us fight off negative thoughts. Next time you tell yourself you're stupid, respond and say "The Lord created me in His image and I was beautifully and wonderfully made." When we use His word to fight off the enemy's attacks like a weapon, we build our faith in God because we are choosing to believe His word is the truth, not the enemy. We have no room for doubt.
These are only a few reasons, but what we speak out matters. We are not called to just be hearers of the Word, but doers! It says to be like-minded and sympathetic, to love one another and be compassionate and humble, not paying evil for evil or insult for insult but give blessing. (1 Peter 3:8) For this specific post, I am in particular talking about loving and being compassionate to ourselves. Speaking negativity towards yourself will not produce the fruits of the spirit. (read Galatians 5:22-26)
It does nothing good for your soul, so now let's get into my favorite affirmations I like to remind myself of everyday.
"The Lord is my Shepherd, I lack nothing." Psalms 23:1
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not rely on your own understanding." Proverbs 3:5
"The Spirit of God dwells in me." 1 Corinthians 3:16
"Do not be worried or anxious about anything, but in everything through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to Him." Philippians 4:13
"Walk by faith not by sight." 2 Corinthians 5:7
Some that are not in exact scripture:
I am created to reflect Gods grace and beauty in everything I do.
Through Christ, I am strong, capable and deserving.
I trust in Gods wisdom to guide my words, actions and heart.
I am choosing to nurture a spirit of gratitude knowing God provides for my every need.
I release the need for perfection and embrace the truth that God's grace is sufficient for me.
Okay I loved point 3 so much!! Jesus always spoke in parables and analogies ( I think is the right word? Lol) and with the sleep anology I was able to make a connection on how to be a better believer and walk in his light even when I can’t see the things he’s doing in my life and others. Like being at the finish line spiritually while walking with your flesh. Also I was debating on whether or not it was okay to speak affirmations over my life and your article cleared that up. Using biblical affirmations really reinforces (in my eyes) your belief in God rather than in self.
